The Drake Maye designed runs are the latest example of a Dysfunctional Organization
Alex Van Pelt was adamant that Drake May would not play this year until he was fully ready. We all believed this plan was hatched above from Elliot Wolf with out Jerod Mayo’s full consent. More realistically, Mayo just probably nodded his head and played it down the middle without any conviction. Waiting for something to go wrong to take the other side. He is classic corporate slime.
Alex Van Pelt was adamant that Drake Maye would not have designed run plays so they could keep the young quarterback safe. Especially with only three games left in the season. Yet, a week after Mayo yet again got himself in trouble post game when pressed about offensive play calling and not using Maye in the run game; wouldn’t you know it? We have a handful of design run plays for the rookie QB.
You could say the same with Marcus Jones. And the whole fiasco that head coach offense didn't realize Marcus Jones could help his team that had the lowest offensive rating in the league. One week later wouldn’t you know it he was in the lineup and two weeks later, he actually caught a pass.
We may not be dealing with full-blown dysfunction for the Patriots, but that is only because in year one of a coaching regime the malice and resentment has not boiled up yet. The give a fuck meter is not totally at rock bottom with the players. We heard Maye come out in support of his coaches and we have heard other players echo support through out the season. We have also seen guys up and quit four weeks in and leak a text message from their agent about wanting to get out. (That player, Wolf’s priced WR free agent KJ Osbourne, was cut a week ago.)
It's also because there's no pressure from ownership to actually succeeded this year. They have succumb to the idea that this is year one of a five-year rebuild and they're supposed to be a dog shit team. The list problems with the Patriots is really long. But, it all starts at the top. This latest display of reactionary decisions because of public pressure clearly show cases ownership involvement and how little control Coach Mayo has on the operation as a whole. I would bet my mortgage this is how it went:
Mayo meets the Krafts for their weekly debriefing>
Krafts - “So, Jerod why has Drake Maye not been used in the run game?”
Mayo - “I’d love if Maye ran more, but that’s the offensive said of the ball you guys said I couldn’t play in that sand box.”
Krafts - “Well, why don’t you let Alex know we said it’s okay to run the kid.”
Mayo - “Gee wow! Oky doky”
Mayo beacons AVP to his office for a chat>
AVP - “What’s up coach”
Mayo - “I asked you to call Batman and you’re Robin”
AVP - “Ok, Batman”
Mayo - “Dad, I mean Ownership thinks we should include some run plays for Drake and I agree.”
AVP - “We said we wanted to keep him healthy because you have a 7 year rebuilding process in place.”
Mayo - “No I didn’t Robin. You must have not got the email. It probably got stuck in my outbox. Yup there it is. The email I sent weeks ago with a bunch of really awesome run designs for Drake Maye was stuck in my outbox. Oh well we can just use what you guys come up with. I believe in you and trust your judgement.”
AVP - “Whatever you say, coach.”
Mayo - “Batman”
AVP - “What?”
Mayo - “Call me Batman”
AVP walks out> End of scene
